In this podcast Lisa Gillis, Chief Academic Officer of Junior Achievement USA, discusses skills that children need for the new future. Some points I found of particular interest:
The 7 Cs:
- Communication
- Creativity
- Critical Thinking
- Collaboration
- Cross-Cultural Understanding
- Career Learning
- Computer Literacy
Today’s youth are digital natives, compared to digital immigrants. (I plan to share a story about this in a future post.)
While discussing the question of “Do kids really not know how to communicate?” Lisa explained her view that children aren’t as familiar with the old ways of communicating, but that this isn’t necessarily as big of a problem as we may think. She colored this with a quote from Daniel Pink: “We need to prepare kids for their future, not our past.”
It’s important to engage kids in conversation so that they process and communicate the information that they are taking in.
